RIP Karl Wallinger
Het brein achter World Party, de auteur van Robbie Williams' She's The One is niet meer.
Op zesenzestigjarige leeftijd is Karl Wallinger overleden.
Voor World Party was hij ook nog lid van Pax (samen met latere The Alarm-leden Dave Sharp en Nigel Twist) en van The Waterboys (ten tijde van 'This Is The Sea'). Ook bij de eerste stappen van Sineàd O'Connor stak hij een handje toe, waardoor zij later een nummer zou mee zingen op het debuut van World Party, 'Private Revolution'.
Met die laatste band maakte hij een aantal schitterende albums en was hij verantwoordelijk voor (radio)hits als Way Down Now en Is It Like Today? Maar vooral dankzij de cover van Robbie Williams kon Wallinger blijven doen wat hij graag deed: muziek maken.
Wallinger laat een vrouw Suzie Zamit, een zoon Louis Wallinger, een dochter Nancy Zamit en twee kleinkinderen na, maar zal vooral blijven doorleven vanwege zijn songs.
"I really believe that songs are just amazing things because they go off and they have their own life," zei hij aan The Big Takeover in 2022. "They get played at weddings and funerals and births and deaths and everything. Happy moments or moments of doubt or moments where it just seems to be the friend you want. It’s a strange thing, the way they have their own life. I love that about them. They’re like kids. They’ve gone off and experienced more of life, probably, than I have. They’ve been in the background when two people are making love, or they’ve been on a car journey to Alaska. All these scenarios where they’ve been experiencing our lives, as well as we are experiencing them. It blows me away. Songs are incredible things. I love them."
