#Nieuwjaarsdeuntjes - Death Cab For Cutie - The New Year (2003)

Een nieuw jaar en dus is het de hoogste tijd voor nieuwjaarsgericht auditief gerief.

Episch mooie song van de doorbraakplaat van Death Cab For Cutie, 'Transatlanticism' uit 2003. “So this is the new year / and I don’t feel any different”, zingt Benjamin Gibbard in The New Year dat de plaat opent, die hen in de vaart der alternatieve volkeren stuwde.

Een clevere popgroep, die altijd net ietsje te slim klonk voor het grote publiek. Het nummer was opgedragen aan een fictief personage, dat samengesteld was uit verschillende vrouwen, die Gibbard had ontmoet: "This song is about a person who came to me one day and said she wanted to be written about. So it's not really my story as much as it is hers. Lyrically, the song revolves around a melancholic New Years' party.”

Gibbard beweert dat het nummer oorspronkelijk klonk als een folknummer, maar de dynamiek van de groep brak het wijd open, waardoor het ook door alle groepsleden ondertekend werd, de andere frontman-zanger-gitarist Chris Walla, bassist Nick Harmer en drummer Jason McGerr. In 2011 werd in Storytellers over deze song gesteld dat: “Maybe The New Year doesn’t exactly offer a ringing endorsement of the notion that a fresh twelve months somehow wipes the slate clean, but thanks to Gibbard’s honest lyrics and Death Cab For Cutie’s cathartic music, at the very least it clears the air for a clean look at the old problems.” Voilà, de essentie van Nieuwjaar in één zinnetje gevat.
