#Zwanenzang - The Police - Wrapped Around Your Finger (1983)
De laatste plaat van een groep of artiest vormt soms een behoorlijk succesvolle en/of fameuze zwanezang.
Maar liefst acht miljoen keer ging 'Synchronicity' over de toonbank en dat katapulteerde The Police nog in hogere stratosferen dan waar ze al vertoefden, maar het was tezelfdertijd ook de molensteen rond de nek van de populairste popgroep ter wereld.
Het trio had er dan een helse rit op zitten met vier lp’s die hen vakkundig van een soort wavy postpunk tot een megapopgroep had gemaakt. 'Synchronicity' dumpte het laatste restje postpunk of ska, dat nog op de voorganger 'Ghost In The Machine' achterbleef en leverde hen hoge rotatiesingles op met Every Breath You Take, King Of Pain en deze Wrapped Around Your Finger en posteerde hen zonder schroom in het rijtje supersterren waarin ook Prince, Michael Jackson of David Bowie stonden.
Een groep op de toppen van hun kunnen, maar achter de schermen rammelde het even heftig. De drie uitgesproken persoonlijkheden betwistten eenieders houding en creatieve beslissing en waren vaak al met "persoonlijke" projecten in de weer, hetgeen het gebrek aan cohesie nog aanzienlijk versterkte en dus bleek een split na een waanzinnige wereldtournee al snel een feit. Er was nog een wanhopige poging voor een volgende plaat maar dat project mislukte.
Wrapped Around Your Finger, van de hand van Sting (zoals de meeste hits), heeft het over de controle over een andere persoon, over dominantie en hoe die om te draaien, want de tekstlijn verandert van "I’ll be wrapped around your finger” naar “You’ll be wrapped around my finger”. Sting, niet vies van een literaire referentie gebruikte de lijn: "Caught between Scylla and Charibdes", hetgeen hij ontleende aan de Griekse mythologie, waarbij de nimf Scylla omgevormd wordt tot het zeskoppig monster Circe, dat passerende boten vernietigt bij de straat van Messina.
Videomaker Kevin Godley die de clip draaide: “In Wrapped Around Your Finger the band is inside a labyrinth of candles, which Sting knocks down at the end. It's all in slow motion, but the lip-sync is in time with the music - something that required an unusual performance. The song was very graceful and very elegant, and we had the idea of the candles, but just filming them among candles didn't seem enough - there was something lacking in the idea. visually, it would look great, but it was about how it moved. I had the mad notion that wouldn't it be interesting if somehow the film was exclusively in slow motion, but the lip-sync was somehow in time to the music".
"We sat down and thought about how this might be possible. You see it quite often nowadays, but I think this was the first time it was ever done. In the studio, we played a sped-up version of the song, so the actual environment we were working in was totally opposite to what it ended up looking like - it was Mickey Mouse. You were listening to Mickey Mouse singing Wrapped Around Your Finger at double speed. We were shooting at fifty frames per second, the idea being when you slowed the film down, they were moving in slow-mo but they were in sync with the track at real time. And it did work. Not perfectly, but it looked amazing - it looked really, really amazing. But on the day, it was insane, because they were rushing around and hitting drums and playing guitars and singing at double speed. It was manic, and by the end of the day, they were exhausted."
Police-gitarist Andy Summers had een hekel aan het nummer: "I've never been much of a fan of that song, actually. Sting got to shoot his part last in that video and made a meal of knocking all the candles out. F--k him." Sting daarentegen was er dol op en op zijn eerste soloplaat 'The Dream Of The Blue Turtles' borduurde hij verder op de song en het thema in Fortress Around Your Heart: "Wrapped was a spiteful song about turning the tables on someone who had been in charge. Fortress, on the other hand, is about appeasement, about trying to bridge the gaps between individuals.This song is vaguely alchemical and probably about a friend of mine, a professional psychic and my tutor in tarot, with bits of Doctor Faustus (Germaanse legende) and 'The Sorcerer's Apprentice' (van Goethe) thrown into the pot for good measure."
